Description
OVERVIEW:
Missed or complex root canal anatomy, separated instrument, pulp canal obliteration, proximity to neurovascular bundle are examples of factors that can complicate routine non-surgical or surgical endodontic procedures. With the recent advances in diagnostic and digital assisted tools (such as CBCT, micro-CT, Nano CT, 3D rendering, and printing), clinicians now have the opportunity to manage these complications predictably. But before utilizing these tools, clinicians should develop a basic understanding of the science behind them. This lecture will review these advanced techniques. Furthermore, the author will share recent data on these techniques from his research group.
OUTCOMES AND OBJECTIVES:
By attending this lecture, the audience will be to:
1- Explain the importance of finding all canal anatomy in the success of non-surgical root canal treatment.
2- Discuss the causes of difficulties in identifying and locating atypical canal locations
3- Compare the different advanced techniques developed to assess canal morphology and anatomical structures at the site of surgical procedures
4- Discuss the use the data generated through CBCT and intra-oral scanner to design endodontic stent.
5- Discuss the concept guided endodontics

Dr. Mj Ahmed
Dr. MJ Ahmed received his DDS from Ajman University in 2005. After one year of internship at Dubai Health Authority, Dr. MJ Ahmed joined the Boston University Institute for Dental Research and Education – Dubai (BUIDRE), where he obtained his CAGS and MSD in Endodontics in 2011. During his residency at BUIDRE, Dr. MJ Ahmed was awarded a grant from the Emirates Foundation to support his research on dental pulp stem cells. While finishing his program at BUIDRE, Dr. MJ Ahmed was practicing endodontics in several clinics in Dubai. In 2012, Dr. MJ Ahmed joined the Goldman School of Dental Medicine, Boston University, USA to complete his DScD in Endodontics.
Dr. MJ Ahmed joined the Center of Regenerative Medicine, Boston University, where he was working on human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cell. He developed protocols for directed differentiation of these cells into cells of different lineages such as endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, neural crest cells and dental pulp cells. Dr. MJ Ahmed received multiple awards, including the Young- Emarati research award, 2016 Best Research award at Boston University, research award from the AAE fall-meeting 2016 and research grant from AAE foundation. Dr. MJ Ahmed is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Journal of Endodontics. Dr. MJ Ahmed joined HBMCDM, MBRU as assistant professor in endodontics.
